Scout Sales Goal = $600
25% of that: $150 in your personal scout account!!!

The Scout account can be used to reimburse your boy for Scouting activities and equipment (such as uniforms, belt buckles, Pinewood Derby cars, items from the Cub Scout store, camping supplies, registration fees, etc).
Please remember to save your receipts!  Once the sale is over, Mrs. Emery will let you know how much your son has in his account, and will send out a reimbursement form to turn in to Mrs. Alcalde.

July 4 Event- Message from Verdugo Hills Council

Hello Pack 310,
We are sharing this information with our families:
This Friday July 4th, before you go enjoy the red, white and blue of the fourth, join at the Verdugo Hills Council Office as we rally in support of Roy Wiegand. Roy, a scouter from VHC, is running to raise money for the children's cancer nonprofit Michael Hoefflin Foundation.  He is also running in honor of our Scout, 12 year old Christopher Wilke who recently passed away.
We are gathering at the VHC office to show our support for a great man, doing a great thing, Roy will be running from Angels Stadium to the Santa Clarita Valley. We expect him at the VHC Office some time between 11:00 and 1:00

I know I have spread the word to several scoutmasters and I hope we can have a big scouting turn out for Roy and Christopher.  We need Scouts to wave flags and encourage Roy.  Glendale and Pasadena fire and police will be joining in, everyone is encouraged to ride or run with Roy for part of the trip.

We will have burgers and dogs while we gather and wait to cheer Roy on!  We will also be collecting donations for MHF.  Roy is hoping to raise at least $48,000.00 on this trip.

So I am calling all families, friends, Scouters, Scouts, everyone to come join us starting at 11:00 am July 4th at the office.

Start your 4th of July celebration with this rally and then on to your other activities.
Please come in uniform!

See you on Friday!

What's the Rosemont Preserve?

A vital piece of protected wilderness in our community that needs OUR help! Conservation and caring for our natural world are a fundamental part of Cub Scouting. Come along and do a good turn!

History of the Rosemont Preserve:
"Working with the Crescenta Valley community, the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy preserved 7.75 acres of wilderness land at the top of Rosemont Avenue in June of 2012, saving the land from development and turning it into a permanent sanctuary for wildlife.
The Preserve is located at northern end of Rosemont Avenue, in the mouth of Goss Canyon. It is backed by about 300 acres that have been maintained as mostly wilderness over the years by private landowners.
The land provides habitat for a number of wildlife species, including mule deer, bobcats, mountain lions, bears, coyotes and endangered Arroyo toads.
Preserving this land effectively doubles the amount of available green space in La Crescenta.
A volunteer community advisory group, the Friends of the Rosemont Preserve, has been formed to help steward the land and develop educational programs for the community."

Pinewood Derby in FEBRUARY!

Hello Pack 310 families!
Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break- just a reminder:
Our 2014 Pinewood Derby is coming up!

When: Friday, February 7th
Weigh-in Start: 6:00pm
**allow yourself time to adjust weight!!
Derby Time: 6:30pm
Where: Lincoln Elementary Auditorium
Coldstone Creamery will be selling ice cream!

It's not just about speed-- in addition to race winners,
there are additional car design judging categories:
  • Most Gravity Challenged (slowest)
  • Judges’ Pick
  • Best Design
  • Scout Themed
What do I need? The car kit!
It is a block of wood with 4 nail axles and 4 wheels. The kits cost $4 from the Scout Store at the Verdugo Hills Council in Glendale (1325 Grandview Ave behind the DMV, open Sat 10-2) or in Sierra Madre (see bottom of page).
Weights & dry graphite (to reduce friction & roll faster) are also available to purchase there.

and plenty more if you search online for "Pinewood Derby tips"

The 2 key things to know are: get the weight right (see below) and make sure wheels spin freely & fast (axles are straight & no friction to slow wheels down, dry graphite works well).

What is the maximum weight? The weight of the car, fully assembled, CANNOT exceed 5 ounces. If it weighs more than 5 ounces, it will NOT be allowed to race. There is a scale in the lobby of the post office on Foothill in La Crescenta that is handy. It *should* be accurate to the one used at the race, but be prepared to adjust/remove weight if needed at the race, if you are right up to 5 ounces.

What if we don't own the right tools? Your den will probably be organizing a workshop day, ask your den leader.

The San Gabriel Valley Scout Shop is hosting a Pinewood Derby "Champ Camp" as a free all-day, drop-in event on Saturday, January 11 from 10-5. (3450 E. Sierra Madre, Pasadena, CA 91107, 626-351-3638) They are very helpful there!

Lowe's in Burbank has Derby Days with demonstrations every Saturday in January from 11am-1pm:
http://dremelderby.com/about-derby-days.html
Call first & verify the store event before you go. It's not really worth a special trip (kits are cheaper at Scout Stores), but you can get a Dremel coupon & a patch.

Good luck, racers!
