How to earn the BSA Solar Eclipse Patch!

🌕🌘🌑

For those scout families interested in learning more about the upcoming Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21st, the BSA has provided us with the following learning objectives.  If your scout completes these requirements, he will earn the BSA 2017 Solar Eclipse Patch.

We will be covering Solar Eclipse Safety & Viewing (item #2) at the Pack 310 Disc Golf-A-Thon on Saturday, August 19th.  Your Den Leaders are looking forward to working with those of you interested in completing the three remaining learning themes.  Enjoy!

How to earn the BSA 2017 Solar Eclipse patch

  1. Locate a site suitable for viewing the eclipse. Search Google for “eclipse viewing” and the name of your city or town to find events near you.
  2. Describe how to safely view the eclipse.
    • Never look directly at the sun. Instead, look directly at these tips from NASA on how to view the eclipse safely.
  3. Discuss with your group what you saw and felt during the eclipse.
    • Post your comments and eclipse photos on social media using the hashtag #BSAEclipse2017.
  4. Do the following:
    • Cub Scouts: Discuss what a solar eclipse is with your leaders.
  5. Ask your unit leader to buy the 2017 Solar Eclipse patch.
    • You’ll find it at your local council service center.

Pack 310 Spring Outing- March 11th, California Science Center

Our Pack 310 outing this Spring is the California Science Center to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor and the Science Behind Pixar exhibit.

First, thanks to the success of Pack 310's fundraising efforts this year, every Scout who decides to go will be paid for by the Pack.   If you would, please RSVP by letting your den leader know if you plan to attend and how many tickets you need no later than the Blue & Gold dinner on Friday, February 17.   Please note, parents and additional family members (siblings, grandparents, etc.) must purchase tickets in advance, which you can do by submitting payment to your den leaders, by Friday, Feb. 17th at the Blue and Gold dinner.

Please make checks payable to "Pack 310".  In the memo line of your check, please list the number of adults AND number of children. Children (non-Pack 310 Scout) up to college age (with ID) are $10 per ticket, and adults are $11.50. This price includes admission to the Center as well as the Endeavor and the Pixar special exhibits.

Due to high demand for attending these exhibits, advance reservations, with payment for additional tickets must be received by Friday, Feb. 17th to your den leaders.  Unfortunately, we are unable to grant additional ticket reservations without payment.

Before we go, here are some details about the trip that will help you make the most of the experience:

Schedule of events is as follows:
10 am - Arrive and check in at Science Center
10:30am-12pm - The Science behind Pixar exhibit
12-1pm - Lunch
1-2 - Endeavor exhibit

Families will need to provide their own transportation to the Center. Parking is $12 cash per car or van, so I would advise carpooling if possible.

Once we arrive, please meet just outside the main entrance to the Center.  Please arrive on time, as there is no guarantee of late admittance after our group enters the Pixar exhibit.  The Science Center does not offer "will call" for late arrivals.  There are no individual tickets, just a single "group" ticket for all members of our party.

Scouts are welcome to bring lunches, which they can keep in backpacks or in their cars during the Pixar exhibit, or they are welcome to buy their lunch at one of the two restaurants at the Center. After lunch, we'll meet back up and head down to the Endeavor.

After we wrap up the Endeavor, all Scouts and their families will be welcome to stay and explore the Center at will, for as long as they want.

See you there!
