How to earn the BSA Solar Eclipse Patch!

🌕🌘🌑

For those scout families interested in learning more about the upcoming Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21st, the BSA has provided us with the following learning objectives.  If your scout completes these requirements, he will earn the BSA 2017 Solar Eclipse Patch.

We will be covering Solar Eclipse Safety & Viewing (item #2) at the Pack 310 Disc Golf-A-Thon on Saturday, August 19th.  Your Den Leaders are looking forward to working with those of you interested in completing the three remaining learning themes.  Enjoy!

How to earn the BSA 2017 Solar Eclipse patch

  1. Locate a site suitable for viewing the eclipse. Search Google for “eclipse viewing” and the name of your city or town to find events near you.
  2. Describe how to safely view the eclipse.
    • Never look directly at the sun. Instead, look directly at these tips from NASA on how to view the eclipse safely.
  3. Discuss with your group what you saw and felt during the eclipse.
    • Post your comments and eclipse photos on social media using the hashtag #BSAEclipse2017.
  4. Do the following:
    • Cub Scouts: Discuss what a solar eclipse is with your leaders.
  5. Ask your unit leader to buy the 2017 Solar Eclipse patch.
    • You’ll find it at your local council service center.
